Who decides what we should remember and what is worth commemorating? We have recognised that the process of creating and preserving monuments is theoretically supposed to be based on the public interest, to reflect our collective memory. However, in Hamburg, the decisions are made by the Office for the Protection of Monuments. But what happens if the public is encouraged to question monuments as part of the official culture of remembrance? Which monuments would then surround us? What would we remember? What would we not?
At the exhibition as part of the "Rundgang Finkenau" at HAW, we opened up a participatory space to collectively question the monument. In the process, over 100 answers were collected: What do you think is in the building? Mayonnaise? What does the monument to the next world war look like? Orange? Why are the soldiers all the same size? Because they all eat the same soup? We later implemented three of the answers as on-site interventions on Tag des offenen Denkmals 2018 (Open Monument Day 2018).
